Baby’s here! It’s time to get out the formula and bottles! But how do you know how much formula to feed, and when?

Marie Gudo has your formula feeding equation via Mommyish:
“With newborns, you should start with 1.5 to 2 ounces at each feeding for about the first week, then you can work up to 2 to 3 ounces every three to four hours.
After that, there is a simple equation you can follow as a guide, based on how much your baby weighs and how often he eats. The basic rule of thumb is 2.5 ounces of formula per pound your baby weighs in a 24 hour period.”

Feeding when the baby seems hungry is called “feeding on demand.” For newborns, that typically means every 2-3 hours. As babies’ bellies expand, and they are eating more, you can increase to every 3-4 hours. Read More via Kids Health Here.
Finding The Right Formula
Not all formulas are created equal. According to Baby Center, there are 4 different types of formula:
- cow’s milk-based formula
- goat’s milk-based formula
- hydrolysed protein formula
- soya-based formula
Different types of formula has different benefits and downsides. Keep reading for the down low here. Your baby’s doctor can help you decide what type of formula is best for your baby.
It is important to sterilize bottles and parts for safety. You can do this by placing bottles and nipples in a pot of boiling water for 5-10 minutes and then letting them air dry. You can also purchase a bottle sanitizing machine if so desired. Be careful about boiling older plastic bottles as they may release chemicals.
Warming the bottle is not necessary, but the baby may prefer warmed formula. You can warm formula by running full bottle under hot water for a few minutes or placing it in a bowl of warm water. Be sure to test to make sure the formula is not too hot.
