Parenting Expectations vs Reality

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

If you are a new parent or about to be, you likely have expectations of how things are “supposed” to go. Parents do not get a “How-To” Manual, however, and things will not always go according to a plan. The earlier you learn to relax and laugh about it, the better your parenting experience will be. To that end, here is a bit of humor for you…

Parenting Expectations Vs. Reality (Video at bottom if you want to scroll down)

Expectation: Beautiful quiet morning, you and your coffee, birds singing in the background.

Reality: You and baby zonked out in bed because you are so exhausted that you’re not sure how to even begin facing the day.

Expectation: Ahhh, sweet cuddle time.

Reality: Putting baby down as gently as possible while you try to escape for a minute alone.

Expectation: A beautiful and clean house, toys contained and displayed with charm in the nursery.

Reality: Books and toys scattered across your living room floor, dishes piled high in your sink, because let’s face it…sleep is more important.

Expectation: Getting baby ready with a smile for a happy outing.

Reality: Tears, lots and lots of tears, yours and baby’s.

Expectation: You looking beautiful, strutting your stuff.

Reality: Trying to juggle a baby in a carrier (do these really have to be so awkward to hold), a diaper bag over your shoulder, and feeling like you are going to need a thousand chiropractic treatments while looking like a hot mess.

Expectation: Your Honey coming home with flowers, finding you cooking dinner, holding your gorgeous and perfectly calm baby, hair fabulously blown out and  you rocking a nice dress.

Reality: You are in your PJs on the couch, attempting to calm your crying little one and you cannot even remember the last time you brushed your hair. You don’t care about the flowers, just exceedingly thankful someone can take this child off your hands for a moment.

Expectation: Rocking that precious bundle and reading Dr. Suess while the baby goes quickly and peacefully to sleep.

Reality: Ah, baby down. No, wait…2 seconds later the screaming and crying begins and you start the process over….5 times. Oh, and by the way, you are completely and utterly exhausted.

We’re poking fun at the reality of new parenthood, but remember- those expectations do happen from time to time and when they do, it’s all worth it because you love your baby more than you ever dreamed possible!
