Everything feels overwhelming to a new mom, but nothing more so than venturing out of the house for the first time with your new baby.
Check out this list of must haves for your diaper bag to ensure you’re prepared for anything that happens while you and baby are out of the house.
Diaper Bag Essentials
What would a diaper bag be without diapers? You need to pack plenty of diapers when you have a newborn as you never know how fast they’ll go through them. On average, you should have a diaper for each hour you’ll be out. Keeping a few extra handy in case of emergencies doesn’t hurt either.
2. Diaper cream
Find a good diaper cream for your baby’s skin and keep it with you always.
3. Diaper disposal bag
When you’re out and about with your little one, you never know where you’ll need to change a diaper or if you’ll be able to dispose of it immediately. Many moms can attest to having to carry a dirty diaper around. Diaper disposal bags eliminate odor and prevent the need to hold onto a dirty diaper until you find a trash can.
Wipes are another diaper bag must-have, but they aren’t just for wiping dirty bottoms. They’ll come in so handy when you need to wipe up any spills or messes, or just clean dirty hands when away from home.
5. Nursing cover
This item may not be a must-have depending on how comfortable you are with nursing in public (or if you nurse at all). You can purchase a lightweight piece of fabric which you can use as a scarf in between feedings.
6. Extra outfits for Baby
Never leave home without an extra outfit change for Baby as spills, blowouts, and all around dirty clothes are to be expected.
7. Bottle of Water
This diaper bag must have is for Mommy, not Baby. Moms get so caught up taking care of their kids that they forget to care for themselves. Staying hydrated will help you feel better, and maintain your milk supply.
This is another diaper bag must have for Mom. It will be a while before you need to pack snacks for Baby, but you need to keep up your strength and energy. A healthy snack in your diaper bag will prevent you from choosing an indulgent (and unhealthy) choice such as donuts or chocolate bars.
If your baby uses a pacifier, it may help to keep them handy in case Baby gets overtired or overstimulated while out and about.
Never leave home without a blanket to wrap your baby in so as to rock them to sleep or cover them with while in the stroller or car seat.
