You Need the Best Organic Baby Formula

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Sometimes you just need the best organic baby formula, y’know?

We at BabyCare Mag are breastfeeding advocates, but that doesn’t mean we don’t support formula-feeding moms. In fact, quite the opposite. As much as we support and advocate for breastfeeding, we also understand completely that sometimes breastfeeding doesn’t happen for one reason or another. And that is okay!

For those mamas and babies who are using formula, we want to be sure you have access and knowledge to the best organic baby formula.

Why use organic baby formula?

Natural formulas are enriched with plant-derived components and a multitude of antioxidants. They avoid as many unnatural chemicals and ingredients as possible. Natural formulas also often have dietary fatty acids to aid in your baby’s mental and physical developmental attributes. Lutein is another element often found in organic formula, and assists in improving your baby’s vision.

When it comes to formula, there are so many different brands, and types screaming for your attention, “Pick me! Pick me!” It becomes exhausting and feels overwhelming. “How do I choose organic baby formula?” you may be asking us.
Some things to think about when it comes to deciding on formula is noting whether or not it contains harmful chemicals. Many formulas have chemicals in their recipe that make your little one’s tummy upset, and we hope to help you avoid that!

Most organic products have close to no mycotoxin, which in significant amounts is poisonous.

Many moms find that non-organic formula makes their newborns struggle with constipation as well as acid reflux. We want to help you avoid this. You want to find formulas that are BPA free, non-GMO, and some moms even have to go as far as hypoallergenic.

“There are various advantages of giving only Organic Baby Formula to your baby, some of which are:

  • All ingredients and the sources from where the ingredients pass all the standards so as to acquire the certification of becoming a baby formula.
  • All these products are grown with proper care such that sewage sludge, genetic engineering or ionizing radiation cannot be used for practices of growing the required ingredients
  • The crops, used in the formula, are grown with natural standards to make sure there are no pesticides or chemicals used for growing.
  • The powered formula is normally made from natural ingredients, so it does not create any problem to child’s digestion system.
  • Organic Baby Formula is quite similar to supplement of breastmilk which helps your child stay healthy and fit.” (http://www.parentinn.com/best-organic-baby-formula-reviews)

Here are the best organic baby formulas we found:

This organic infant formula is top-notch when it comes to formula, especially for your newborn. It is highly recommended and THE best organic formula we can find. Its composition is similar to (but not equal to, nor as good as) breast milk. “The formula is composed of high-quality proteins, carbs, vitamins, minerals and most importantly of all, essential fatty acids.” (http://www.parentinn.com/best-organic-baby-formula-reviews)

2. Baby’s Only Organic Dairy Formula

Baby's Only Organic Dairy Formula

For 12 months and older.

Available on Amazon.

Contains higher levels of essential fatty acids.

This formula is amazing for many reasons, but one is that it is certified as gluten-free. The ingredients are excellent as it contains no corn syrup, rBST dairy, or GMOs. “This is the ideal product for parents who are ultra health conscious and are very particular about what goes inside their baby’s body. A perfect all-in-one meal package for your baby’s nutritional needs.”  (http://www.parentinn.com/best-organic-baby-formula-reviews)

3.Nature’s One, Toddler Formula, DHA & ARA, Dairy, Iron Fortified

Nature's One, Toddler Formula, DHA & ARA, Dairy, Iron Fortified

For 12 months or older.

Available on Amazon.

Contains compliant DHA & ARA.

This organic formula has a tolerable taste (a lot of formulas do not), is gluten-free, and has no corn syrup!

We love products without corn syrup.

“As with most Baby’s Only products, there are no genetically modified ingredients used here, and neither is the milk coming from cows that have been on steroids or growth hormones.” (http://www.parentinn.com/best-organic-baby-formula-reviews)

4. Earth’s Best Organic Sensitivity Infant Formula with Iron

Earth's Best Organic Sensitivity Infant Formula with Iron

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Contains Omega-3 DHA and Omega-6 ARA fatty acids.

There are plenty of “sensitive formulas” available, but this product is organic which makes it top-notch!

If your baby has a sensitive tummy and/or struggles to digest formula, try this one!

It may very well do the trick of nourishing your little one. “Earth’s Best Organic formula eliminates all the bad things while focusing on the right ones to produce a formula that is god-sent for many parents whose babies have difficulty with formula.” (http://www.parentinn.com/best-organic-baby-formula-reviews). This does, however, “contain glucose syrup solids (corn syrup solids, a cheap substitute for lactose).” (https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/safe-infant-formula-guide/).

5. Earth’s Best Organic Soy Infant Formula with Iron

Earth's Best Organic Soy Infant Formula with Iron

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Contains Omega-3 DHA and Omega-6 ARA fatty acids.

This formula does contain soy.

If your little one is soy-intolerant (which is not uncommon), avoid this!

It is still highly nutritional and is packed with great and essential nutrients that are necessary. It is USDA certified with zero artificial coloring, flavors, preservatives, or GEI. This does, however, “contain glucose syrup solids (corn syrup solids, a cheap substitute for lactose).” (https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/safe-infant-formula-guide/)

6.Plum Organics Grow Well Organic Infant Formula

Plum Organics Grow Well Organic Infant Formula

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Contains DHA and ARA.

This organic formula uses organic lactose as its only carbohydrate. Therefore it has no corn syrup which is something you really want to avoid! Lactose is the most abundant carbohydrate found in breast milk, so this formula helps mirror breast milk in some ways. It is also gluten free and kosher dairy.

7. The Honest Company Organic Premium Infant Formula

The Honest Company Organic Premium Infant Formula

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Doesn’t contain DHA or ARA.

“What helps set Honest apart from the rest, is that it is without DHA and AHA, fatty acids typically added to the formula to support brain and eye development. These supplements are often extracted from hexane, a toxic byproduct from petroleum processing.” (http://www.bestproducts.com/parenting/baby/g1491/best-baby-formula-brands/). Honest Company Organic Premium Infant Formula is hexane free! They recommend adding their fish oil supplement to Baby’s bottle, so Baby gets those crucial, but naturally-sourced, fatty acids to help their brain grow.

8. HOLLE Organic Goat Milk Formula

HOLLE Organic Goat Milk Formula

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Doesn’t contain DHA or ARA.

Holle’s organic goat milk is just that: goat milk. Therefore, it is dairy free. It is also gluten-free, cow-milk free, and sugar-free making it very easy on your baby’s tummy and easier to digest.

Holle’s goat milk formula is the only certified organic goat milk formula. Holle organic goat milk is without DHA/ARA and therefore is hexane free. (https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/is-goat-milk-formula-healthier/)

Again, adding fish oil to Baby’s diet will add those crucial fatty acids. You can also look at Holle’s other options if you are hoping for DHA/ARA free formula.

9. Similac Advance Organic

Similac Advance Organic

For first 12 months.

Available on Amazon.

Contains DHA and ARA.

Similac, in general, is often complained about by moms for making babies constipated. However, if you decide to try their Advance Organic, you may end up liking it! There is really no way to know until you try it.

This organic formula contains sugar, soy, dairy and more that could be problematic for your little one.

You may even find Wholefoods Organic Infant formula; they are sneaky because they do contain palm oil and corn-based sugars which are hard on your little one’s tummy.

You may be looking at the prices of these organic formulas and thinking, “is organic baby formula worth it?” If you are wanting to feed your little one something that is highly similar to breastmilk, yes. It is entirely worth it. Organic baby formula producers are forced to go above and beyond the standard to become certified organic. Look for coupons! They are online, in parenting support groups, even in the mail!

But can I feed my baby homemade formula?

YES! As always, consult your care provider when making this decision BUT do your research as well. It is unlikely your doctor has done much research into the homemade formula, or into the ingredients of store-bought formulas. So do your research, present your thoughts/concerns, and enjoy an informed, empowered conversation!

How to make homemade organic baby formula:

Over at Wellness Mama (https://wellnessmama.com/), we found that “unlike commercial baby formula options, the homemade versions have a base of milk or broth with added real-food, nutrient-dense ingredients like gelatin, probiotics, beneficial high-vitamin oils/fats and acerola powder. This chart shows the nutritional comparison between breast milk and these homemade formula options:” (https://wellnessmama.com/53999/organic-baby-formula-options/)

How to make homemade organic baby formula:

We found this trustworthy and worthwhile homemade organic formula recipe from Wellness Mama:

Homemade Organic Baby Formula (Dairy Option)

  • Print
  • Prep time – 10 mins
  • Total time – 10 mins

The homemade baby formula combines nutritionally dense ingredients like raw milk, whey, lactose, probiotics, cream, gelatin healthy oils and more.
Author: Wellness Mama
Serves: 36 ounces

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole raw cow’s milk, preferably from pasture-fed cows
  • ¼ cup homemade liquid whey (see recipe in “notes” below) Note: Do NOT use powdered whey or whey from making cheese (which will cause the formula to curdle). Use only homemade whey made from yogurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
  • 4 tablespoons lactose
  • ¼ teaspoon bifidobacterium infants
  • 2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (preferably not ultra-pasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
  • ½ teaspoon unflavored high-vitamin or high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil or 1 teaspoon regular cod liver oil
  • ¼ teaspoon high-vitamin butter oil (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • ¼ teaspoon acerola powder
  • 2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes
  • 2 teaspoons gelatin
  • 1-7/8 cups filtered water

Instructions

  • Put 2 cups filtered water into a pyrex measuring pitcher and remove 2 tablespoons (that will give you 1-7/8 cups water).
  • Pour about half of the water into a pan and place on a medium flame.
  • Add the gelatin and lactose to the pan and let dissolve, stirring occasionally.
  • When the gelatin and lactose are dissolved, remove from heat and add the remaining water to cool the mixture.
  • Stir in the coconut oil and optional high-vitamin butter oil and stir until melted.
  • Meanwhile, place remaining ingredients into a blender.
  • Add the water mixture and blend about three seconds.
  • Place in glass bottles or a glass jar and refrigerate.
  • Before giving to baby, warm bottles by placing in hot water or a bottle warmer. NEVER warm bottles in a microwave oven.

We hope we have freed you from the overwhelming trap of finding the best organic baby formula for your family. Let us know which one you pick (especially if you make homemade), why you love it, and if you recommend it!
