Best Formula for Gassy Babies Review

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

If you’ve done all you can to relieve your babies irritable tummy, you may want to look into the best formula for gassy babies.

It is common for babies drinking formula to experience gassiness. Ultimately, your baby’s young digestive system isn’t designed to drink formula right away.

However, as your little one grows it does get easier. If your baby is having trouble with digestion, gas pain, and most importantly hasn’t grown out of this stage, it could be as simple as changing your baby’s formula to see an improvement.

It’s important to note that the following formulas are for babies with cow milk sensitivity. Babies who have a certain allergy are typically put on a prescribed formula so keep that in mind at your little one’s next appointment.

Best Formula For Gassy Babies

There is a lot of formula on the market to choose from. Once you notice your baby’s intolerance, it can become intimidating to find the right formula to ease the problem as well as continue to provide the nutrients your little one’s needs to grow and reach milestones. From infant to toddler, here are some of the best formulas for gassy babies on the market.

Before you read on here are some things to keep in mind when purchasing a new formula:

Let your baby be the judge of what formula works best. What might work for another mother’s baby won’t necessarily mean it will be perfect for your little one. We definitely try to keep that in mind when we are reviewing baby products.

However, what we can do is provide valued opinions when it comes to the taste and the effectiveness from other moms so that you are confident in choosing the best formula based on your expectations. Most importantly we strive to provide you with factual information.

Best Formula with DHA

Enfamil Gentlease Baby Formula

Enfamil Gentlease is the number 1 pediatrician-recommended formula for fussy and gassy babies. It is designed to help grow, develop and strengthen your bundle of joy.

It is a nutritionally complete formula that is created similarly to breast milk. Fatty acids such as DHA and ARA found in breast milk, helps with your little one’s brain and eye development.

What makes this formula easier on your baby’s digestive system is partially broken down proteins. Many moms are very satisfied with Enfamil. They reported no constipation, calms fussy baby, and it mixes easily.

Best Organic Formula

Earth’s Best Organic Sensitivity

This USDA certified organic formula also has essential nutrients to provide your little one with optimal support to grow and thrive in their first 12 months of life. Not only does it contain DHA and ARA, but it also has lutein. This nutrient is an amazing antioxidant, which will help protect the eyes a

nd vision.

It also is iron-fortified for red blood cell development and contains 95% less lactose in comparison to standard milk-based formulas.

Many mothers were satisfied with the product. Their babies showed no signs of stomach irritability.

However, some moms reported that their little one didn’t like the taste and also noticed that the formula didn’t mix well with room temperature or cooler water.

Also, some mothers are not especially impressed with the qualities of the formula due to an unpleasant smell and foamy consistency after mixing the formula.

Best Non-DHA Formula

Honest Infant Sensitive Organic

The Honest company has so far exceeded all expectations with their organic certified awards and certifications.

They offer naturally derived, and high-quality organic ingredients sourced from trusted organic farms.

With a blend of iron, Vitamin D3, Calcium, contains 65% lactose and Folic Acid, it is nutritionally complete to ensure your baby’s support and growth. It is also blended with organic non-fat milk powder and prebiotics to help support healthy bacteria.

What makes Honest different from the other companies is that it is made without DHA/ARA. Mothers reported the formula was easy to dissolve, babies love the taste, and does improve colic and gas. One major con was that the formula doesn’t contain DHA.

Although they do offer a DHA supplement, many mothers don’t like the inconvenience of adding a supplement to formula. Also, some reported that the supplement leaves an oily residue in bottles and doesn’t mix well with the formula.

Best Probiotic Formula

Gerber Good Start Soothe Non-GMO

As advertised, Gerber Good Start Soothe Formula is specially formulated for babies experiencing excessive crying, colic, fussiness, and gas.

What makes this formula different from the others on the market is it contains probiotics, which are designed to ease any colic that your baby might be experiencing. This formula also includes broken down proteins, 30% lactose, and DHA.

Many mothers reported that the formula relieves colic and a sensitive stomach in only one day.

Also, the taste is perfect for picky eaters. However, it takes a little more effort to dissolve the formula and does leave clumps when mixing.

Best HMO Formula

Similac Pro-Sensitive Infant Formula

Similac has an excellent reputation for quality formulas at an affordable price. Although is it isn’t organic, you will still find the nutrition your baby needs.

What’s special about Similac Pro-Sensitive Infant Formula is that it contains 2’ FL HMO (Human Milk Oligosaccharide). HMO helps to strengthen baby’s immune system similar to breast milk.

It’s Non-GMO; it contains DHA, Lutein and Vitamin E. According to the reviews, we noticed that mothers who chose Similac tried other brands and were very satisfied with Similac’s pro-sensitive formula.

Moms saw regular bowel movements and alleviated other symptoms immediately. One con mothers noticed is that the formula creates foam/bubbles when it’s mixed.

Best Dairy-Free Formula

Nutramigen with Enflora

Nutramigen is another contender because it is specifically designed for babies with colic due to a confirmed cow’s milk allergy and I’ve yet to see any other similar formula on the market.

This formula is dairy free, hypoallergenic, easy to digest with probiotic LGG and extensively broken down proteins.

According to their website, Nutramigen with Enflora is clinically proven to manage colic due to cow’s milk allergy within 48 hours. We’ve seen a lot of positive feedback for Nutramigen, and although it is more expensive than the other formulas available, it is #1 recommended by pediatricians.

Many mothers used Nutramigen because both breast milk and formula caused reflux, gas, and constipation. If you’ve tried sensitive, or non-GMO formulas with no success Nutramigen may be just what your baby needs.

Toddler Formula

As your baby continues to grow, a sensitive formula for toddlers is a great supplement to keep when your baby is lactose intolerant. If your child is still experiencing symptoms, the following are the best formula for gassy babies.

Best DHA Formula

Similac Go & Grow Sensitive

Similac is a great product to continue optimal nutrition for your toddler’s diet.

The formula includes DHA, Lutein, Vitamin E and over 25 essential minerals and vitamins such as calcium, iron, Vitamin C.

What I love about this formula is that it’s kosher and gluten-free.

Mothers found that the formula was an easy transition from being breastfed and or formula fed.

Check out their website for more information.

Best Organic Formula

Baby’s Only Organic LactoRelief

For mother’s who promote organic nutrition, Baby’s Only Formula is a great option for your little one’s sensitive tummy.

Intended for lactose sensitivities, this formula is lactose-free. It also contains DHA and ARA from egg yolks without additives such as hexane, algae or fungus sources.

According to their website, DHA from egg yolks are more easily absorbed than from other sources.

I’m especially impressed with Baby’s Only is that they don’t use corn syrup and palm oil.

This family owned company has a great following of devoted mothers who love the product and are impressed with its results.

Based on our findings we noticed that many parents who are advocates of breastfeeding but are not able to breastfeed tend to gravitate to this formula because of it organic promise. However, a lot of mothers reported that it is too expensive for the amount in comparison to the other brands.

Goat Milk

Introducing goat milk to your toddler’s diet is an option if you are looking for an easy on the tummy solution but do not want to introduce cow’s milk. Goat milk actually has around the same amount of lactose as a cow milk base protein formula.

However, goat’s milk is less allergenic, more nourishing and easily digestible. The following are goat milk alternatives which are looking to stay away from cows milk after your baby is 1 year and older.

Kabrita Non-GMO Goat Milk

Kabrita is a great goat milk formula for your toddler to try. This formula is naturally easy to digest and has 22 vitamins and minerals including folic acid, DHA, ARA, and iron. Also, there are no preservatives, artificial colors, and flavors.

What I love about this company is they pride on the care of their goats to produce safe and healthy milk. According to their website, their goats are raised on family farms and graze on fresh grass, so there are no antibiotics, growth hormones, or pesticides.

Moms approve of this brand to transition from breastfeeding or to supplement with breastfeeding because of the similarities. Babies who drank Kabrita relieved acid reflux and eczema.

Also, it promotes regular bowel movements with babies with a dairy sensitivity. Some babies with a lactose allergy may show no signs of improvement although the goat lactose can be easier on the tummy.

Nanny Care Goat Milk

NANNYcare is another great goat milk formula from goats raised in New Zealand.

This small company is a huge advocate of breastfeeding but however prides themselves on providing the best formula available to meet you baby’s needs.

What is so impressive about NANNYcare is that their manufacturer was the originator and inventor of goat milk formula for more than 30 years.

Nutrition includes Vitamin D, Iron, and Calcium. Based on whole goat milk this formula has no added whey proteins and is formulated to match the benefits of breast milk.

What mothers love about it the most is there are no additives or sugars like glucose or corn syrup. Also, their goats are non-GMO and organic fed. This is ideal for toddlers who have a tough time digesting with cow’s milk. It dissolves quickly, and babies love the taste.

Homemade Formula Recipe

The Weston A. Price Foundation is a non-profit organization providing food and health information based on traditional, nutrient-dense diets. Dr. Weston Price’s research has discovered that optimal nutrient dense food positively impacts the overall health and well-being of the human body.

According to their website:

“The Foundation is dedicated to restoring nutrient-dense foods to the human diet through education, research and activism. It supports a number of movements that contribute to this objective including accurate nutrition instruction, organic and biodynamic farming, pasture-feeding of livestock, community-supported farms, honest and informative labeling, prepared parenting and nurturing therapies. Specific goals include establishment of universal access to clean, certified raw milk and a ban on the use of soy formula for infants.”

If breast milk is not an option, The Weston A. Price Foundation provides a dairy and non-dairy option for a certified homemade formula recipe. What is so amazing about this recipe is that the ingredients include whole nutritional foods. Please be sure to consult with your baby’s pediatrician before introducing homemade formula.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole raw cow’s milk, preferably from pasture-fed cows
  • 1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) Note: Do NOT use powdered whey or whey from making cheese (which will cause the formula to curdle). Use only homemade whey made from yogurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
  • 4 tablespoons lactose
  • 1/4 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis
  • 2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (preferably not ultrapasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
  • 1/2 teaspoon unflavored high-vitamin or high-vitamin fermented cod liver oil or 1 teaspoon regular cod liver oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon high-vitamin butter oil (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes
  • Two teaspoons gelatin
  • 1-7/8 cups filtered water
  • 1/4 teaspoon acerola powder

1. Available from Radiant Life 888-593-8333, www.radiantlifecatalog.com. In Canada, see www.ovioorganico.ca
2. Earlier versions of this web page called for 1 tsp of Bifidobacterium Infantis and 1 tsp of acerola powder–these were typos.
3. Use only recommended brands of cod liver oil. See our recommendations here.
4. We do not recommend collagen hydrolysate, but only recommended brands of gelatin listed in our Shopping Guide.

Instructions

  • Put 2 cups filtered water into a pyrex measuring pitcher and remove 2 tablespoons (that will give you 1-7/8 cups water).
  • Pour about half of the water into a pan and place on a medium flame.
  • Add the gelatin and lactose to the pan and let dissolve, stirring occasionally.
  • When the gelatin and lactose are dissolved, remove from heat and add the remaining water to cool the mixture.
  • Stir in the coconut oil and optional high-vitamin butter oil and stir until melted.
  • Meanwhile, place remaining ingredients into a blender.
  • Add the water mixture and blend about three seconds.
  • Place in glass bottles or a glass jar and refrigerate.
  • Before giving to baby, warm bottles by placing in hot water or a bottle warmer. NEVER warm bottles in a microwave oven.

Please visit the website to find more information on their homemade formula.

Bonus! Herbal Drops for a Sensitive Tummy

If you’ve heard of Mylicon Drops or Gripe Water, you know they work for easing gas pains, but unfortunately, there are a ton of dangerous, and questionable ingredients such as pesticides and preservatives that are extremely alarming.

Thanks to The Healthy Home Economist, we learned about Nature’s Sunshine Catnip And Fennel extract. This liquid herb consists of only natural trace herbs and vitamins. Not only is it effective, it brings peace of mind knowing that mothers are giving their baby a safe remedy.

Finding the right formula for your little one can be overwhelming.

And while we’re big advocates of breastfeeding, we know that breastfeeding isn’t possible or ideal for every mom.

Just keep in mind – formula companies are businesses and businesses need to make a profit. It’s a simple, unavoidable fact. While many works diligently to offer good products to the public, the only person who truly has your little one’s best interests at heart is YOU!

So do your research and feel good about doing the best you can. All moms are!

We’d like to hear from you! If you have any testimonials on these products or questions, please leave a comment in the box below.
